iphone Apps not living up to expectations

When the iphone first came out people expected Apple to be all over programming new and useful applications that would make the lives of phone users easier. That seems to not be the case. The top apps on the iphone, 75% to be exact consist of games.

So where are all of the individual developers that were planning on developing apps? One useful thing that the Apple apps store does offer is a spreadsheet app. I am not sure how that would be super beneficial, but at least it is something.
